Minecraft’s Denmark ‘Americanized’

Back in April, Simon Kokkendorf and Thorbjørn Nielsen of the Danish Geodata Agency led the initiative to map out the entire country of Denmark on a 1:1 scale and release it to the public. Their creation was soon ported with careful planning and reconstruction into Minecraft, but it seems the virtual Denmark is to be no more.

Now, small Danish towns and villages have been virtually destroyed, replaced by players with tanks and American flags.

Over 4 trillion blocks were used in the original construction of the virtual Denmark, which was inteded to be used for educational purposes. But it seems like that is no more.

Welcome to manifest destiny, people.

Although the Danish government initially banned users from bringing in-game dynamite into the map, it took players less than two weeks to discover a loophole. Instead of using dynamite on its own, they could bring into the map a mining cart loaded with dynamite and use it to wreak havoc among the Danish architecture.

Looks like that one went just about as well as the German invasion of Denmark in 1940.

While it’s unlikely that the cyber vandalism was conducted by actual milita-forming and gun-wielding Americans of the South and Midwest of the United States, the government of Denmark did not seem to be too upset by the coming of Team America.

Speaking to The Register, Chris Hammeken, chief press officer at the Danish GeoData Agency had the following to say:

We consider that as a nature of playing Minecraft — elements are broken down and new are being created. Therefore we will not reboot the demonstration of Denmark in Minecraft. But occasionally we will rebuild minor areas if buildings are removed and nothing new is being created.

Still, Hammeken makes it clear that the Danish GeoData Agency means to “…reconstruct Copenhagen and the other cities.” However, as per now, only minor areas have been affected.

While this story develops, and the Danish are about as successful with cyber vandals in their virtual countries as they were with Nazis in their real country, enjoy this Team America video about the supremacy of American interests abroad or whatever.

Daniel doesn't just play and write about games, but he also writes his own comics. He can usually be found arguing with Dale about who the best member of the X-Men is (it's Jamie Madrox, obviously)
