Yesterday, EA Sports revealed details on UFC’s career and multiplayer modes. The MMA-style fighting game will feature a dynamic career mode which starts the player off as an underdog with the aim of rising to the UFC hall of fame.
Career mode borrows the ranking and leveling systems of RPGs, allowing you to add perks and abilities as you level up. You’ll need it, as the game also features an “artificial intelligence” that will adapt to your fighting style mid-match. It certainly sounds impressive, though we haven’t yet had a chance to test it for ourselves.
The game will also let you completely customize your character from the ground up, including the look and placement of tattoos.
Interestingly, the new career mode does not automatically end in success. As you progress through each fight, your player will gain or lose popularity. According to EA Sports, however, if you fight recklessly and take too many hard hits over the course of your career, your fighter’s “longevity” meter will run out and you’ll be forced into an early retirement.
It’s refreshing to see the threat of total failure return to such a big-box title, especially one exclusive to Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen consoles.
Online modes follow the standard leaderboard format that we’ve come to expect. You will be able to track fighter stats, and compare them with friends through a feature EA is calling the ‘Fighternet’. The main new feature here is a rivalry mode which will let you take on a friend one-on-one, and let you break down all the fight stats post-match.
EA Sports UFC comes out for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on June 17th.
