The world is getting into Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Square Enix’s drastic reboot of their second Final Fantasy MMO. And that means many players from the older MMO, Final Fantasy XI, are playing the game less and less. Enough so that today the game’s producer Akihiko Matsui announced by way of press release that German and French in-game text support is going to be dropped. As such French and German language options are going to be removed after the July 2014 update.
However German and French players won’t be losing their characters or settings. They’ll still be able to use them in English environments provided the language barrier doesn’t intimidate them, though some of their macros may need to be modified.
Curiously, customer service support for French and German speakers will remain in place:
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our francohpone and germanophone players for their fantastic long-time dedication to FINAL FANTASY Xl, and will continue to provide French and German speaking customer support services.
For many French and German speakers A Realm Reborn might be looking increasingly tempting each day. English speakers on the other hand can rest easy in the meantime as Matsui promised that “English localisation support will continue”. For how long though is anyone’s guess.
