New screens have emerged for Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s upcoming The Evil Within. Publisher Bethesda Softworks has billed the game as a return to form for the survival horror genre, dubbing it a “Pure Survival Horror”. The screens demonstrate the unusual 2.35:1 (cinematic) aspect ratio that the game employs to enhance immersion. We previously posted the game’s latest trailer earlier this week.
The Evil Within follows the story of Detective Sebastian Castellanos whose police unit is wiped out by a mysterious force. Players will have limited resources at their disposal to help them navigate a form-shifting environment where “Corridors, walls, doors, and entire buildings change in real-time”.
The game was built using a customized version of the iD Tech 5 engine that powered Rage, allowing it to utilize complex lighting and shading techniques. The Evil Within is currently set for release on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. As of yet there is no firm release date but is expected to be out sometime in 2014.
