Bandai Namco, the developers of the upcoming Super Smash Brothers games for Wii U and 3DS have reportedly posted a job listing on the Japanese website e-Career FA for the upcoming “Super Smash Brothers 6”, a game which is currently scheduled for release in 2015.
It should be noted here that this year’s forthcoming Wii U and 3DS Super Smash Brothers titles are considered together to be the 4th entry in the series, as only 3 games have been released to date.
The listing says that the team is currently comprised of 120 people, and will be increasing to 200. Or rather, that is what it said; the listing has since been removed from the site, despite the original poster appearing to be legitimate.
The post went on to say:
“Social games are currently a big hit, but the current state of job opportunities for making retail games is critically low. In the midst of this, this will likely be your only chance to be part of a development project for the Smash Bros. [series], which has surpassed a total of 10 million in worldwide sales. And Bandai Namco believes that now is the best time to recruit programmers for retail games.”
A rather glum message, but what does this all mean?
Firstly, it could mean that despite the upcoming Smash Brothers games being considered the same entry up until now, the 3DS and Wii U versions could actually be considered the 4th and 5th games in the series, with a 6th game coming next year. Considering that the first three games were released over more than a decade, it seems unlikely that we will get get three more games in the span of only a year.
The more likely and more distressingly possibility is that the “6” is a typo, and that the release of the upcoming Smash Bros game is being pushed back to 2015 and is perhaps being overhauled. This would leave Nintendo with no known tent-pole releases for this holiday season.
There will be a Nintendo Direct tomorrow focused on Super Smash Brothers, so we will likely get the answer then.
