Titanfall Gets Matchmaking Tweaks

titanfall patch

Although the Titanfall launch was quite smooth - particularly for an EA launch - as noted in our review, the game “certainly isn’t perfect.” One area in particular that the game needed improving was the matchmaking system. Luckily, that didn’t go unnoticed by the minds behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Respawn Entertainment is aware of the issues plaguing matchmaking, and has implemented player feedback into their restructuring of the system. As detailed in this blog post on the Titanfall website, here is what the developer came up with: two essential ways on how to improve the matchmaking experiences for players of all skill levels. These are the updates:

  • Searching for teammates and opponents will now sometimes take more time to look for players that are a good skill level match, rather than purely prioritizing speed over quality. This will give us more time to build better teams and create closer games that are worth staying in for a longer period of time.
  • Rather than playing against the same opponents over and over, the game will periodically split the teams apart and search for new opponents for each team. This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round. Did you lose to a really great team? We’ll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team - and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked. This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you’re having an off night.

The game currently uses skill data to build the teams and after “those two teams play a few matches it is usually very clear which team is better.”

Respawn Entertainment fully admits that it previously was not “taking full advantage of this information,” and has now implemented an “Improved Matchmaking (Beta)” playlist that can be utilized, as opposed to the “Play Classic MP” functionality.

Respawn Entertainment will be wisely keeping a tighter eye on how these changes impact gameplay, and if they are happy with the results, will fully integrate the functionality into both the Xbox One and PC versions of Titanfall.
