Warner Bros. Interactive has released some new screenshots for Rocksteady’s latest Batman title, Arkham Knight.
The screens, which you can see below, show off the Batmobile and the titular villain. We know that players will be able to drive the Batmobile, but what we don’t know is just who the Arkham Knight is; is he a new character, or is there a familiar face lurking underneath that mask? The character design is reminiscent of Batman, with the familiar pointy ears, albeit the suit has a far more armored, almost cybernetic look to it. Could it possibly be that Jean-Paul Valley, otherwise known as Azrael, is behind the mask? Valley, in his guise as Azrael, was last seen during Batman: Arkham City, so he’s already established as existing in Rocksteady’s take on the mythos.
In the comics, Azrael took up the mantle of the Bat while Bruce Wayne recovered following an unfortunate run-in with Bane during 1993’s Knightfall story arc. Crippled and confined to a wheelchair (an event interpreted in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises), Wayne asked Valley to stand in for him. Unfortunately, Valley proved to be slightly less than mentally stable, redesigning the suit into something far more sinister before eventually transforming into an all-out villain, determined to replace Wayne permanently and deal out his own personal brand of lethal justice.
Batman: Arkham Knight is due to be released towards the end of the year on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
