Anita Sarkessian, owner of Feminist Frequency and creator of the Tropes vs Women series of videos about the misrepresentation of women in videogames, has been accused of copyright infringement by professional artist Tamara Smith in an open letter on Smith’s Tumblr blog.
Smith claims that Feminist Frequency used her artwork without permission when they produced a logo for the Kickstarter that they launched to fund the Tropes vs Women series. The artwork in question is her interpretation of Princess Daphne from 1980s Laserdisc game Dragon’s Lair. The original piece can be seen on Tamara’s personal blog and the version used by Feminist Frequency can be seen on their Kickstarter page. A comparison of the two showing how Smith’s artwork matches up with the logo can be seen on Belgium based blogger Vicsor’s blogspot page.
Smith says that she has attempted to contact Feminist Frequency’s Anita Sarkeesian but without response. We have reached out to both Smith and Sarkeesian for comment and will update you if we hear back from them.
