The developer of inexplicably popular mobile game Flappy Birds has clarified his reasons for taking the popular game off digital marketplaces.

Speaking to Forbes, developer Dong Nguyen explained that he took the game down because it became “an addictive product.”

“To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Birds. It’s gone forever.”

Some were surprised that a developer would walk away from a game that was reportedly earning them over $50,000 daily. Now, if Nguyen is to be believed, we know the answer. Despite the controversy over the game’s addictive mechanics, Nguyen has vowed to continue developing games: “After the success of Flappy Bird, I feel more confident,” he explained.

In other news, an iPhones with the game installed have started appearing on popular internet auction site eBay. One auction reached a staggering $100,000 before being pulled, as reported by CNET.

Flappy Birds was originally released in May of last year and tasked players with helping a little bird navigate between narrow green pipes that suspiciously resembled those found in a certain kingdom of mushrooms - a fact which saw the developer embroiled in no small amount of controversy. The developer later denied that he had been issued a legal threat from Nintendo for copyright infringement, claiming the resemblance was “coincidental”.
