Final Fantasy XIV comes to PS4 14th April

Final Fantasy XIV will be available to play on the Playstation 4 from the 14th April, developer/publisher Square Enix has announced.

The MMO has been enjoying a newfound influx of players after it recently received a major facelift with A Realm Reborn.

If you currently play the game on PS3, you’ll be able to transfer over to PS4 for free. There’s a catch, however: Once you’ve transferred over, you can’t go back.

Also, from the 22nd February, there will be an open beta available to everyone with Sony’s shiny new home console. So if you’re remotely interested in seeing what the game has to offer you might want to check it out.

To celebrate the game’s arrival, Square Enix will be releasing a special collector’s edition containing an art book, soundtrack CD, security device and several in-game items, among other stuff. Which is nice.

Final Fantasy XIV originally launched on PC back in September 2010 after 5 years of development. Despite the extended gestation period though, it wasn’t particularly good. Full of bugs, lacking content and highly demanding on hardware, it suffered from a significant player backlash and negative critical reception. Producer Hiromichi Tanaka - who had previously helmed Final Fantasy XI - ended up resigning and handing over development reins to Naoki Yoshida. Work immediately commenced on A Realm Reborn which saw the game migrate to a new game engine, a completely redesigned gameworld and significant amendments to gameplay mechanics.
