Sega has formally announced the existence of Alien: Isolation, a new first-person survival horror game in the popular Alien series.
Isolation is being developed by Creative Assembly, perhaps better known for the Total War series of grand strategy games.
Far from being a fast-paced shooter like many previous Alien games, Isolation focuses on tension. Playing the role of Amanda Ripley and set 15 years after the events of the first film in the series, the player’s mission is to explore the space station Sevastopol in order to locate the black box of the ill-fated mining vessel Nostromo, which was destroyed during the climax of the movie. Of course, you’re not alone on the station - a single, giant Alien will spend the game trying to hunt you down.
Players will need to hide out of sight and tread cautiously at all times, utilizing objects in the environment such as lockers to hide from the monster. Creative Assembly claims that the Alien has been programmed with advanced artificial intelligence and will learn over time - while you might be able to fool it once, attempting the same trick a second time will result in failure.
Details about the game evoke memories of Frictional Games’ Amnesia: The Dark Descent. If Isolation comes anywhere near the pant-wetting terror that game invoked then it should be something very special indeed and finally restore some of the fear that has been missing from the series for so long; the last game in the franchise, Aliens: Colonial Marines was only frightening due to just how poor it was.
Check out the announcement trailer above. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the game over the course of its development until its release towards the end of this year.
