“New Year’s End” is an impressive new fan-made film set in BioShock’s Rapture.

YouTube user Hawken has created a breath-taking six minute thirty-one short film set in the Bioshock universe. If you haven’t seen this already, do so - it’s simply stunning. Featuring some impressive direction and effects - at least, so far as fan-made films on a miniature budget are concerned - the film depicts the night when everything falls apart in Andrew Ryan’s self-styled utopia.

In case you’re not familiar with Bioshock, Irrational Games set out to create a spiritual successor to System Shock 2. After years after work - and a number of different protoypes - Bioshock was the final result. Set in the underwater city of Rapture in an alternate past, Bioshock detailed a nightmarish scenario where a man-made utopia built around the philosophies and ideas of real-life author Ayn Rand. In her novel Atlas Shrugged, Rand put forward the notion of a society where individuals are allowed to pursue their dreams and ideas unconstrained by morality. It was a philosophy she called Objectivism, and her work has been the subject of extensive discussion and debate over the decades since Atlas Shrugged was originally published back in 1957.
