The upcoming patch for Batman: Arkham Knight on PC is going to be worth the wait.
That’s according to Nvidia distinguished engineer (that’s his actual title) Tom Peterson, who discussed the company’s work on the game in the latest Gameworks video, published over on MMORPG.com. Nvidia was brought in to assist Rocksteady with ensuring that Arkham Knight‘s notoriously buggy PC port is brought up to snuff, and it looks like the graphics card manufacturer is going above and beyond the call of duty.
“We’re fixing a ton of things that are not necessarily related to us,” Petersen says in the video. “Some of it may be related to our driver, some not. But at the end of the day, the game is our focus and we’re going to make it great. We have 200-300 engineers that are really visual scientists. They’re the best out there.”
Regarding the game’s state at launch, Petersen is pretty candid about where he thinks the blame lies, saying that publisher Warner Bros. “made a few mistakes getting the game out.”
“It wasn’t fully performance optimized for PC,” Petersen explains. “So now we’re deploying our QA resources and our engineers to make that game as good as it possibly can be.”
Petersen’s comments echo allegations made earlier this month by sources within Warner Bros. QA department. Speaking to Kotaku under conditions of anonymity, the sources claimed that the publisher was well aware of Arkham Knight‘s poor level of performance on PC - but published it anyway.
What followed was widespread anger from PC gamers, who reported low framerates, missing graphical features, and a woeful lack of customization options. Warner Bros. later pulled the game from Steam, apologizing to gamers and directing them to request a refund via Steam or their local retailer.
Since then, the publisher tasked original developer Rocksteady with ensuring that Arkham Knight is brought up to par on PC, and also enlisted the help of NVidia. Iron Galaxy, who originally ported the game to PC, is not involved the cleanup.
Batman: Arkham Knight is an excellent game. Yours truly awarded it a score of 9/10 when I reviewed it shortly after launch, though it isn’t without its faults. The titular Knight never feels as much of a threat as he should, and the Batmobile sections often feel like padding. But overall, Rocksteady has brought the trilogy to a fantastic close.
“Rocksteady knows Batman,” I wrote in my Batman: Arkham Knight review. “At times, it feels as though the developer understands the character so well that no one else will ever measure up. Over the course of three games, the studio has set a benchmark so high that I feel sorry for any developer having to follow in their footsteps.”
