Nintendo Direct kicked off today with a the revelation that a new Fire Emblem game is in production for the 3DS.
A brief trailer was shown, which you can check out below, but right now details are scarce. What we do know is that the game will be developed by Intelligent Systems, the team who developed Fire Emblem: Awakening, the last game to be released in the Fire Emblem series, which was also released on 3DS.
This as yet untitled game will be released for the new 3DS family, which includes the 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL, and the new 3DS XL. We could therefore make the assumption that the game will be a direct sequel of Awakening. However, the characters showcased in the trailer don’t appear to be familiar (unless Sully has taken to riding on a Pegasus) and it is much to early in the development cycle to confirm this.
What we do know is that this new adventure will add an aspect of challenge that has never been seen before in the franchise and will ask the player to make decisions that will affect the game worlds in new ways.
The thing that seems to have attracted the most attention of fans is that the environments are looking considerably more Eastern in design. The environments in Awakening had an incredibly Western atmosphere which was representative of typical Western RPGs, with large impenetrable fortresses and vast open plains of green. The trailer appears to showcase a similar art style to Awakening, but with structures such as dojos and tenshukakus, the game appears to represent Eastern culture a great deal more.
The Fire Emblem franchise is a fantasy tactical role-playing game which first arose for the NES in 1990. There have been eleven games in the main series so far, as well as a series of manga adaptations, an anime OVA and even a card game. Super Smash Bros. has also made sure that the franchise is well represented, with characters such as Marth - the main protagonist from the original game - and his female counterpart, Lucina, having appeared in the fighting game since Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001, with several stages also being themed on various Fire Emblem games. The series has been met with critical acclaim and is highly regarded as being one on Nintendo’s best franchises.
