Former Wii U-exclusive ZombiU will launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC on August 18th as a digital download, Ubisoft has announced.
The announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that the Australian ratings board classified the survival horror game’s new incarnation last month. At the time, Ubisoft declined to comment on the leak; but the publisher has now made the news official, and even released a trailer to accompany the announcement.
On Wii U, the GamePad was an integral part of the ZombiU experience, forcing you to look at the controller’s screen in order to sort through your inventory and unlock doors. That requirement returns for this new version of the game, though there’s no mention in the announcement of just how ZombiU has been adapted to work without a second screen.
One thing that has changed is the game’s title. Ubisoft has dropped the “U” - opting instead to call the game simply Zombi.
As you might expect, ZombiU’s visuals have received a bit of an upgrade. Lighting and texture resolution appears to have been improved over the original, though it’s unlikely you’ll mistake it for a game built from the ground up for more powerful hardware. Still, ZombiU remains one of the more attractive games on WiiU - so while the new version won’t win any awards for technical achievement, it’s far from ugly.
Jeremy Wojdyla reviewed ZombiU for Continue Play, and found it to be a genuinely frightening take on the well-trod zombie survival genre, with innovative use of the Wii U’s unique controller. Jeremy scored Zombi U 7/10.
“Despite many of ZombiU‘s shortcomings, overall it’s a unique, enjoyable, and scary endeavor,” Jeremy wrote in his ZombiU review. “If other games implement the gamepad like ZombiU does, I look forward to playing them.”
