According to latest reports from the Japanese Amazon site if you’re looking forward to playing the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 3D on Nintendo’s shiny New 3DS handhelds, or Xenoblade Chronicles X (the new one) on Wii U, you might want to pick them up at retail - unless you want to find yourself investing in a new SD card or external hard drive.
Earlier this month, developer Monolith Soft confirmed that the Wii U sequel will weigh in at a hefty 22.7gb for those downloading it from the Nintendo store - over 3 quarters of even the premium version of the console’s built-in storage. But the real kicker is reserved for the latest news about the New 3DS exclusive port of the Wii original - which will occupy a staggering 28,800 memory blocks if downloaded from the eshop. Here’s the listing, for those who can read Japanese.
3.6gb makes the Xenoblade remake possibly the biggest 3DS game released to date - and makes something of a mockery of the 4gb storage afforded by the micro-SDHC card the unit ships with. To put this into perspective, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is the first New 3DS-exclusive title due for the system. If the very first system exclusive takes up almost the entire storage available, then some gamers might be wondering what to expect from future titles.
So if you’re thinking of purchasing your copies digitally, you might want to think again - lest you find yourself forced into playing storage Tetris just to download the games in the first place.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is due out exclusively on New 3DS and New 3DS XL on April 2nd in Japan and EU, and April 10th in North America. Xenoblade Chronicles X - the sort-of-but-not sequel exclusive to Wii U, currently has no firm release date other than in Japan - where it is set to launch on April 29th.
