Upcoming PC-based MMO Wildstar Online has officially entered open beta.

Well, for 10 days at least. During that period, the game’s servers will be freely accessible for 24 hours a day so that developer Carbine Studios can ensure their servers are up to the task of housing a large influx of players ahead of the game’s June 3 release date.

Wildstar Online has been in development for several years, after a number of key World of Warcraft developers broke away from Blizzard to set up their own studio. With a Sci-Fi Western theme, it’s certainly different from your usual run-of-the-mill MMO, while it features a number of new additions to the genre. Combat is strongly focused on positioning, with clear zones displayed on the ground that show where enemy attacks will hit, while players are granted the ability to perform dodge rolls, double jumps and other combat maneuvers.

In addition, players are able to customize their playstyle by choosing between 3 different “paths” during the character creation process, separate from character class. These paths tailor your experience, allowing you to experience a large number of exclusive missions focused around platforming, puzzle-solving or helping to establish outposts around the game’s world.

We’ve been playing Wildstar extensively and it’s definitely worth a look. With some attractive visuals and plenty of new ideas, it’s definitely one to keep an eye ahead of game’s final release. If you’re at all interested in the genre, we recommend checking it out during the ten-day open beta window.
