Ubisoft has announced that Watch Dogs has gone gold. The open world action-adventure game has been in development for over five years, according to the publisher.
Watch Dogs was originally scheduled to be launch title for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2013. Ubisoft delayed the game one month before its release date, disappointing many fans who were getting a new-gen console for the it. Players won’t have to worry about another delay though, as the game is set to launch later this month.
“It’s exciting to be gold,” says Creative Director Jonathan Morin. “But it’ll be more exciting when people are playing. For the fans it means that it’s true. It means there will be no such thing as another delay. But for us, it’s not done until they actually have it in their hands.”
Regarding gameplay and player choice, Lead Gameplay Designer Danny Belanger commented on Ubisoft’s blog: “We tried to make a game that’s very scalable in the sense that it supports your play style,” he said. “It supports what you want to do most of the time. And it also supports your motivation. Do you want to play a story? Do you want to drive? Do you want to shoot? Do you want to hack? Do you want to play with others? Do you want to play on a tablet? It allows players to do what they feel like, which I find really cool. There’s lots of things to explore, there’s lots of things to try. I think the greatest thing about Watch Dogs is doing what you think is fun.”
Watch Dogs is set to be released on May 27 worldwide on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The Wii U version still doesn’t have a release date, though there are rumors that it may be coming this fall.
