Gaijin has added a brand new patch - 1.41 - to their WWII MMO War Thunder.
The meat of the patch? Tanks.
Once confined to a small segment of the most dedicated members of the community, tanks have now been released to every single one of its six million players. Anybody who wishes to play with these steel beasts need only register and have the armored might of the Motherland and the Fatherland (the Soviet Union and Germany) at their disposal.
CEO of Gaijin Entertainment: Anton Yudintsev said that: “Our goal from the beginning with War Thunder was to create a game that allows players to safely experience the perils of a full scale world war.”
This looks to have been achieved, with plenty of large-scale air and land battles already taking place. Gaijin however is seeking to limit the interaction between ground and air forces thus far, to allow further balancing and testing.
Perhaps the most significant difference between War Thunder Ground Forces and other games of its type is the realistic damage models for all tanks involved. It’s entirely possible to annihilate a tank in one shot if the shot is placed exactly right. Health bars have been completely done away with.
Full tech trees involving almost every type of armored vehicle are now available for both the Germans and the Soviets. These vary from heavy tanks to the lighter medium and light tanks, all the way through to Tank Destroyers and Assault Guns. Self-propelled AA guns also make an appearance.
Gaijin has also shown heavy multi-turreted tanks, such as the huge Soviet T-35. Currently included is a vast lineup of T-34 variants, Panthers, Tigers and post war tanks - including the most-produced tank in history, the T-54. Gaijin promises that in the future all other nations currently represented in the game will receive their own Ground Forces in the future.
