Vigil Games has not had a great time in the last couple of years.
Officially, the studio ceased to exist after THQ’s breakdown, scattering developers around the world. Lucky for the team behind Darksiders, they managed to survive as a part of Crytek USA.
Crytek’s recent financial problems forms the reason David Adams (Vigil’s founder) had an epiphany, leaving the company after just 18 months in order to form another independent studio called Gunfire Games and taking 7 other lead members with him.
Whilst Adams stated he respected Crytek’s creativity with games such as Ryse: Son of Rome franchise and regretted leaving while Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age was so deep in development, he said that the departure was a group decision made due to Crytek’s recent financial difficulties. ““I decided and resigned that same day,” Adams said. “Forming another independent studio was something that I thought about because of what was going on… “It got to the point where people were starting to leave.”

Adams went on to say that Gunfire was currently speaking to publishers in order to see what work they can get, as well as being in talks with Nordic Games - current owners of the Darksiders IP - with a hope of making a third game in the series. Both installments were excellent games, providing a more action-oriented alternative to The Legend of Zelda and featuring character designs by famed comic book artist Joe Madureira, best known for his work on Marvel’s Uncanny X-Men in the mid-nineties and his own creator-owned comic, Battlechasers.
While the first game was released before our time - making it a prime candidate for a Retrospective Review at some point - we do have a review of the sequel. Wes Copeland scored it 9/10 in his review, saying that “Darksiders 2 is everything you want from a game. Puzzles are the right level of difficulty, combat is fast and eventually becomes a dance where Death glides from one enemy to another with grace, and it’s big. It took me 21 hours from start to finish and still there’s another 15 or so hours of side quests, the crucible, and weapon hunting. Then when you factor in New Game+, you realize just what a good investment Darksiders 2 is.”
