Last June, executive producer Zach Braff and Variance Films took to Kickstarter to crowdfund the documentary Video Games: The Movie, which chronicles the rise of videogames from a niche hobby to a multi-billion dollar global mega industry. Filming has now been completed, and the official trailer has been released through social media, YouTube, and Kickstarter.

The documentary follows the history of the medium as told by developers, publishers, consumers, and fans of the industry, and promises to be a celebration of gaming. Variance will also try to contextualize what it means to be a gamer, as the culture is so often misunderstood or misrepresented in popular media at large. By looking at current technological trends, the film will ask questions about the future of the medium and directions that developers can choose to take over the next 10, 20 and 50 years.

The long list of contributors includes such notable figures as Warren Specter, Wil Wheaton, Alison Haislip, Chris Hardwick, Cliff Bleszinski and many more.

The film will be available in select theaters nationwide on July 18th and available for digital purchase and streaming the same day it hits theaters. Further details on availability can be found directly from their website and Kickstarter page.
