Anyone searching for a job in programming?

Well, if you look in the right places, you may stumble upon a job request from Sony for a Senior Game Programmer on a six-month contract. The actual work itself seems pretty standard, run-of-the-mill programming, but a small section of the advertisement has an interesting implication. The advertisement asks for “a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system”.

In short, Sony is looking for a programmer to experiment with a proof-of-concept theoretically designed to run on next generation hardware. The barest traces of the beginning of the building of a theoretical PlayStation 5, or whatever naming convention Sony elects to use.

Opinion: Given that the job listing it looking for a programmer to design a theoretical game to test a concept relating to a new piece of hardware is effectively someone buying a piece of yarn and speculating the buyer is going to make the world’s largest rug. While the logic can track, this is still the deepest, darkest speculative hole a mind can wander down. The job is testing a concept that might relate to a new console, not even necessarily the new console itself, or even that our current technology is going to be suitable, as the request is for Research and Development.

Still, progress is progress, and there are signs of Sony at least looking forward with this test. Perhaps not even a traditional console, but instead a machine designed to be used with PlayStation Network or PlayStation Now. Either way, the potential leads to some interesting questions.
