The popular game developer tool - Unity Engine - is rumored to be on the market.
As of yet, Unity Technologies hasn’t placed a “For Sale” sign on their front lawn; however, a presentation outlining the value of Unity has apparently been placed on the desks of interested parties. Unity has not yet commented on the possibility of purchase, although a steadfast claim from an inside source states that Unity’s leadership have been in serious talks with a potential buyer. It was mentioned that prominent companies have been inquiring, specifically Google - who has made similar acquisitions in the past - but without confirmation either way, the rumored sale is like a report of snowfall in Florida.
It’s currently unclear how much Unity is actually worth; however, a recent article on VentureBeat estimates that Unity Technologies is asking from over $1 billion to as high as $2 billion for their product.
Unity Technologies has made headway in the gaming industry by introducing the Unity engine, a game designing tool used in popular games such as Blizzard’s Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and the upcoming Angry Birds Epic, developed by Chimera Entertainment. Created during the advent of the iPhones, it allowed software designers to create apps for iOS without using Apple’s coding tools. Later it expanded to other smartphones, PCs and console gaming. With 3.3 million registered unions, it is a popular choice for game developers both large and small.
