Total Chaos: A Doom 2 mod like no other

The Doom modding scene is still alive and well. Over the years all kinds of mods have been produced for iD Software’s classic, ranging from the absolutely bizarre to the totally badass. Die-hard fans have put in hours and hours of effort to take the games they love and turn them into something completely different. But even as these mods take the series down new avenues, there is always something distinctly Doom about them.

Step forward Total Chaos. Believe it or not, this is a mod of Doom 2, despite looking and playing nothing like it. With modern graphics and a complete lack of firearms, it looks to be one of the biggest departures from Doom II the modding community has ever put out.

Yes, you read that last part right - it’s Doom without guns. This may sound wild and downright offensive, but hear us out - Total Chaos aims to have you traipsing around an abandoned island in order to uncover its secrets and find a lost community of coal miners. And while you’re doing all of this, you’ll have to survive the hordes of monsters using your brains and whatever hazards you can create. The game is seen through the eyes of a video camera, making the player feel like a documentarian (a la Outlast) and giving everything a gritty tint that only makes the desolate island creepier.

According to Wadaholic, the team behind Total Chaos, a beta release will hopefully be available sometime towards the end of the year. In the spirit of the modding community, all assets will be made public for anyone who wants to tackle their own project upon official release. Those who’d like to track the progress of the mod’s development can check out the official development blog here.

Take a look at the mod for yourself in this video, and feel free to let us know what you think in the comments.
