CD Projekt RED has finally brought it’s mobile platform Witcher MOBA out of BETA, free to play, with a release date of January 22nd for iOS and Android mobile platforms. The Witcher Battle Arena is set to expand the Witcher universe, including a number of characters from the primary The Witcher titles all appearing in a mobile experience.
CD Projekt has promised a fair and balanced game that has in-game purchases to accelerate unlocking, but locks no content behind a paywall. The website describes the system as such: “Everything in the game is unlockable for free, just by playing the game. Our system is honest, well balanced and doesn’t keep you playing for ages to unlock something. If you want to get something unlocked faster, you can purchase it for a reasonable price. It’s that simple.”
While a truly fair Free-to-Play system has existed in other games, especially other MOBA titles, having a good balance between incentivizing purchase and allowing for entirely free players to thrive is a subtle line to walk. That said, CD Projekt has a pretty stellar track record for consumer-first decisions, and it’s unlikely that it would change that philosophy over something like this.
More information can be found on the official website, or first-hand when the game is released tomorrow.
