Super Mario Kart may have just raced onto the Wii U Virtual Console, and Mario Kart 8 has just receivedthe (in)famous Mercedes-Benz downloadable content, but there’s no real middle-ground for fans who love the gameplay of the first, but want new content and upgraded graphics.

Super World Karts, a new Kickstarter launched from Australia, hopes to bring the best of both worlds to Mac, PC, and Ouya next year. This cart-racing title brings 16:9 ratio and 1080p resolution gloss to gameplay heavily inspired by the Super Nintendo classic, while modern achievements join multiple modes of weaponized racing.

While much of the game is clearly inspired by classics of the past (rings from Sonic the Hedgehog, peppers function like Super Mushrooms), many of the cast hail from other indie titles.

  • Mutt, Lobodestroyo
  • Turing, Read Only Memories
  • Tim Burr, Fist Of Awesome
  • Elena, Whispering Willows
  • Filo, So Many Me
  • Duck, Duck Game
  • Sparky, the OUYA Android

The game hopes for OUYA’s FreeTheGames fund, which means OUYA will help fund the game for timed console availability to the system.

Goals for the Kickstarter include Linux, WiiU, Gamestick, Xbox (unclear if One or 360), and PlayStation (unclear if 3 or 4, but Vita is clear) ports, alongside improvements to the soundtrack and graphics.
