TAPRR, a newly formed Australian-based studio that boasts talent from Konami, Namco Bandai, Warner Brothers, Animal Logic DC Comics and Dreamworks, has launched a new Kickstarter called SumoBoy, purported to be the first anti-bullying game to get a proper Kickstarter campaign. Inspired by Legend of Zelda, Bastion and Diablo III, SumoBoy follows the adventures of Oji, a young orphan who is bullied constantly by his peers.
Fortunately for Oji, his luck soon turns as he finds out that his long lost mother is none other than the Princess of the Elements in a faraway land called Seishin. Tasked with restoring order the world, Oji must reunite with his mother and use a combination of the Blade of Balance and his signature Sumo moves to defeat the evil Kurai Kami.
As Oji travels through Seishin, he simultaneously heals himself and overcomes his bullying in the real-world, playing back into the game’s anti-bullying message. If you would like to donate and support this campaign, you can visit the game’s official Kickstarter page.
With 35 days to go, the game has reached $2000 AUD of its lofty $100,000 AUD goal, but there’s still plenty of more time to secure funding despite SumoBoy’s slow start. You can take a look at the game’s trailer and screenshots below and decide if this is a project you’d like to back.
