Street Fighter II Soundtrack To Be Remastered

Street Fighter II Soundtrack to be Remastered

Street Fighter II’s soundtrack is to be remastered for a new generation of music lovers, it’s been announced.

Music label Brave Wave has announced a new series of projects that it calls the “Generation Series.” The project will focus on reproducing and remastering “definitive editions of legendary video game soundtracks. . . overseen and approved by the respective composers or the person in charge of the sound team (wherever possible).”

Generation Series #001, slated for release sometime this year, will be the Street Fighter II soundtrack. The rerelease will include “new remasters of both CPS-1 and CPS-2 versions of the arcade game, extracted directly from the arcade boards and approved by original composer Yoko Shimomura.”

If you’re the type of person that likes owning physical media to display proudly on your shelf, you’ll be excited to hear that there’ll be a physical release of the album, which will include liner notes from Yoko Shimomura and Polygon writer Matt Leone. As if that isn’t enough, Brave Wave will be producing a limited-edition vinyl release “remastered in translucent colored vinyl, with art prints sourced from the Capcom archive.”

You might wonder what’s so special about this news. After all, music companies release remastered versions of music all the time; but the fact that Brave Wave is working with the original composers could bring about some interesting results. Perhaps the entire album will just be faithful recreations of the original music (which would be great), or perhaps it will be an opportunity for the composer to say “here’s something that I really wanted to emphasize, but we didn’t have the capabilities at the time,” or “we were close to a deadline on this part, so I didn’t get to really fully develop this particular track.”

Either way, this is excellent news for fans of video game music, and it will be nice to see classic video game music given a new lease of life.
