In the bid combat spamming and phishing accounts, Steam users must now spent at least $5 USD to access some of the service platforms most popular features.
The news comes from Valve’s latest update post. The Half-Life and DotA 2 developer/publisher explaining their decision as a means of protecting users from malicious steam accounts.
Some features that the new Limited User Accounts cannot access include:
- Sending friend invites
- Opening group chat
- Voting on Greenlight, Steam Reviews and Workshop items
- Participating in the Steam Market
- Posting frequently in the Steam Discussions
- Gaining Steam Profile Levels (Locked to level 0) and Trading Cards
- Submitting content on the Steam Workshop
- Posting in an item’s Steam Workshop Discussions
- Accessing the Steam Web API
- Using browser and mobile chat
With regards to spending the funds, this action can completed in a variety of different ways. Users have the option to either purchasing a game worth $5 USD or more, adding funds to the Steam Wallet or purchasing a Steam Gift valued at that amount.
Its also important to note that CD keys, retail purchases and gifts do not remove the limited user functions, so users need to follow any of the above steps. Orders will be tracked in USD, so users not purchasing with that currency will have their funds converted using the daily exchange rate.
