Valve has announced that its return policy on Steam is changing - you’ll now have fourteen days to return purchases “for any reason,” as long as the play time is less than two hours.
Here’s Valve’s official statement on the policy:
“You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason. Maybe your PC doesn’t meet the hardware requirements; maybe you bought a game by mistake; maybe you played the title for an hour and just didn’t like it. It doesn’t matter. Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within fourteen days of purchase, and the title has been played for less than two hours.”
Steam’s previous system involved you having to accept a waiver every time you purchased a game, which in essence signed away your right to return the product. Now, whether it’s because you can’t actually play the game, your CD key isn’t working, or you just don’t like it, you can still get your money back. The money will either be refunded to your Steam Wallet, or returned via the original method of payment.
It wasn’t that long ago that our own Taylor Hidalgo reported that the Better Business Bureau gave Valve an F, mostly because of its customer service (or lack thereof). Valve promised to do better, and it looks like they’re living up to that promise.
There are a few stipulations to the return policy for things like DLC and gifts, which you can read about in Valve’s announcement.
