Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm may have only been on sale for 2 days, but it’s already sold over 1.1m copies, Blizzard has announced today.
“We want to thank the global StarCraft community for the incredible passion and support they’ve shown for Heart of the Swarm,” said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime in a statement released this morning. “In addition to a brand-new single-player campaign, we added a ton of enhancements with this expansion to make StarCraft II even more fun to play, and more exciting to watch. We’re pleased to see gamers and eSports fans around the world enjoying Heart of the Swarm.”
Heart of the Swarm is the second installment in the Starcraft 2 trilogy, following Wings of Liberty, which was released back in 2010. Whereas in Wings of Liberty players took the role of Jim Raynor and the Terran (human) race, Heart of the Swarm sees you take control of the insectoid Zerg and their ruler, Sarah Kerrigan. Swarm introduces a leveling mechanic; Kerrigan is a persistent unit and gathers experience from every mission, leveling up and allowing the player to choose new skills and new evolutionary traits for their units.
Aside from an extensive single-player campaign, the expansion also introduces a raft of new maps, units and balance changes for the game’s overwhelmingly popular multiplayer element.
In addition to enjoying impressive sales, Blizzard also announced that over 1.1m people tuned in to watch the company’s marathon 21-hour live stream of global launch events. At its peak, over 125,000 people were watching the event on Twitch at the same time.
