Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void enters closed Beta

Just over 2 years since the previous expansion Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard’s final installment of the Starcraft 2 trilogy is edging closer to realease.

Blizzard has announced that Legacy of the Void is due to enter closed Beta testing on March 31st. The expansion, which places the focus on the Protoss race, will deliver a brand new campaign, new units for all three playable factions, changes to the game’s multiplayer leaderboard system, and finally close the storyline first developed in 2010’s Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty.

As usual, Blizzard is taking their time with the game - the developer is known for only releasing games when they’re satisfied. Legacy of the Void is likely to form the linchpin of the developer’s release schedule this year; DotA 2 rival Heroes of the Storm is still well in development, Overwatch was only revealed late last year, and as popular as Hearthstone is, its upcoming Blackrock Mountain expansion isn’t enough to make massive headlines. Players have been waiting a long time to get their hands on the second expansion for Starcraft 2, so news that it’s finally ready to be released to players - even if it in the form of a closed beta - is likely to see a resurgence of interest in the popular RTS game.

Legacy of the Void is set to conclude the story first begun in Wings of Liberty. With the Zerg and the Terrans now in an uneasy alliance as they attempt to combat the universe-ending Amon, the Protoss’ role in events is set to be pivotal in order to resolve the conflict and save the galaxy.

Blizzard has released a new trailer to coincide with the announcement, which you can view below.
