Star Marine Is The FPS Portion Of Star Citizen

Star Marine

Cloud Imperium Games has revealed the FPS portion of Star Citizen in a big reveal.

Star Citizen has always planned on having multiple components. The first of which is the space combat, mining and trading portion of the game, and another is Star Marine: a multiplayer first-person shooter set in the same persistent universe. Other components include a singleplayer and drop-in co-op multiplayer campaign called Squadron 42 and Cloud Imperium Games has various studios from all over the world helping them out with the different components such as CIG Austin as well as Santa Monica, Foundry 42 from Manchester and Illfonic who are all contributing to Star Marine.

Star Marine, unsurprisingly just like Star Citizen, will be built with Crytek’s CryEngine which was used to create the Crysis series, as well as the impressive looking Ryse: Son of Rome - so top notch graphics are to be expected.

In a very enlightening post on the Roberts’ Space Industries website, Chris Roberts, chief developer of Star Citizen, shed a little light on the characters, art, environment, animation, matchmaking, music and sound that players can expect, as well as a pretty nifty sounding Zero-Gravity sci-fi sports game called Sata Ball.

“Since the days of Wing Commander, I’ve dreamed of integrating a first person shooter with a space sim,” Roberts wrote.

“It’s such an exciting idea: you might land your fighter on a carrier and then race into battle to repel alien boarders… or you might put down on a seedy border world and fight off pirates eager to steal your cargo! And on a broader level, it speaks to our longtime goal of increasing immersion: you’re no longer taken out of the action with between-mission gameflow menus or worse. Instead, from the moment you start the game to the minute you exit, you’re living in and interacting with the Star Citizen world!”

At 2014’s PAX Australia Cloud Imperium Games showed off a bit of FPS gameplay for Star Citizen - this is presumably what has transformed into Star Marine. You can check out that video below:

There’s still no release date for the first version of Star Marine, but Roberts said CIG plans to revise and update the game post launch.

We still don’t know when Star Marine will be released - they developer is certainly taking their time - but we do know that Roberts has plans to revise and tweak the game before it launches to ensure that it lives up to expectations. “Recent weeks have focused on getting our ducks in a row based on our internal testing,” he wrote in the reveal, “which has led us to revamp everything from overhauling the network backend to improving the character animations you saw at PAX East to the revamping the zero-g portion of the game to better match our lore.”
