Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda, in an interview with Japanese outlet Nikkei Trendy (translated by Gematsu), teased some upcoming Final Fantasy news following the release of Final Fantasy XV, including a surprise JRPG release for home consoles.
“For fiscal 2015, I think we have a considerable amount of high-end games both inside and outside the country,” Matsuda said, “starting with Final Fantasy XV, we’ll be putting out news for Japanese RPGs.” He continued, saying, “I think we’ll have a little surprise, too,” before clarifying with “a JRPG for home game machines.”
The concluded the interview by saying, “With respect to HD titles for 2015, our Japanese and Western studios are both bolstering their lineups considerably, so it’d be wise to keep an eye on them.”
If everything above is accurately translated, it would seem that many surprises are likely to come for long-term fans of the Final Fantasy series. With Type-0 not far on the horizon and XV close as well, the potential for new HD remakes (or perhaps new series entirely) should prove a positive treat for fans. Especially following the disappointment of the potentially scamming Final Fantasy Mystic Quest remaster that made the rounds last month.
Myself and Dale recently discussed what we thought were six of the best Final Fantasy spinoffs, which you can read for yourself here. With Final Fantasy Type-0 HD being released across all territories over the course of the next few days, Final Fantasy XV being developed right now, and Final Fantasy VII port coming to the PlayStation 4, it seems unlikely that this speculation will be another game within the main franchise. Either way, we’re sure that the game will be something fans have been anticipating for a while now.
