It appears that Obsidian and Ubisoft’s upcoming South Park game, The Stick of Truth, has been censored in Europe.

In an article on BT.com, it has been revealed that seven scenes have been removed from the game. Among the scenes deemed to be unacceptable are an instance where a doctor performs an abortion on the player; a scene where an abortion is performed on one of the NPC characters, Randy; and 5 instances where characters are anal-probed.

The Stick of Truth is rated 18 in the UK. You might be forgiven for thinking that adults are able to handle a few references to anal probes and abortion, particularly given that the TV show has been making references to those subjects for years without suffering the censor’s wrath.

A role-playing game rendered in the distinctive 2D art-style of the tv show, The Stick of Truth is shaping up to be a very interesting prospect indeed - a good thing too, because previous videogame adaptations of the show have been less than stellar. We’re still trying to forget about the woeful N64 game.

Series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been closely involved in the development process this time round, ensuring that if nothing else, the game should remain incredibly faithful to the tone of the show.

The game has had a troubled development; a number of lengthy delays preceded a period where the game’s future was uncertain following the closure of one-time publisher THQ. It has been subsequently picked up for release by Ubisoft. Developer Obsidian is no stranger to development problems - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II was famously rushed to release by LucasArts, resulting in a large amount of cut content, while espionage-RPG Alpha Protocol underwent numerous revisions at the behest of Sega.

The game is finally being released on March 4th in the US, March 6th in Australia, before finally hitting European shores on March 7th. Our review will follow shortly after.
