Sony taking GT5, Resistance and others offline.

Sony will be shutting down server support for several popular PS3 games, they’ve announced via their UK Support site (thanks, CVG).

As of the 28th January, players will no longer be able to access the online features for MAG, SOCOM: Special Forces and SOCOM: Confrontation.

Then from 28th March, online support for all 3 Resistance games on PS3 will cease.

Finally, on 20th May, you’ll no longer be able to race online in Gran Turismo 5.

With Sony’s efforts increasingly turning towards their recently-launched Playstation 4 console, it’s perhaps understandable that support for older games fall by the wayside. Still, it’s a little disheartening for owners who still enjoy playing them, particularly for people who still play MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation, as both of those titles are online-only, meaning that owners will be left with a shiny new drinks coaster.

With the exception of Gran Turismo 5 and possibly MAG, none of the games ever particularly set tills ringing up and down the land upon their release; the Resistance series in particular, while certainly solid titles, never quite picked up the audience or fanbase that Sony had no doubt hoped for, and the series was effectively killed off last year. It’s also worth pointing out that of all the titles listed, Resistance 3 is the most recent and that was launched originally back in September 2011. Gran Turismo 5, of course, has since been superseded by the sixth installment, which went on sale for PS3 only last month.

So if you still spend time playing any of those games online, enjoy it while it lasts.
