Sony has announced that they are developing a new Virtual Reality headset for the PlayStation 4.
Dubbed Project Morpheus, Sony claims that the headset will deliver “the next level of immersion and demonstrates the future of gaming,” according to a press release sent out this morning.
Morpheus comprises a head-mounted display which works in tandem with the PlayStation Camera. Sensors in the headset track movement, while the Move controller will be used to simulate various objects, such as a sword, in the player’s hand. In addition, the unit will adopt 3D audio that not only adapts to the players position in the game, but also adapts to the angle of their head.
“At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play,” said Shuhei Yoshida, President of SCE Worldwide Studios. “Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we’re looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators.”
We’ve come a long way since the birth of VR back in the early nineties. Originally dubbed as little more than an expensive fad, the technology fell out of favor, but it looks to be making a strong comeback. Morpheus isn’t the only VR system in development for gaming of course; the Oculus Rift is on it’s way for PC gamers, and Microsoft are also heavily rumored to be working on their own system for the Xbox One.
