Sleeping Dogs, originally launched back in August of 2012 through Square Enix, is set for a re-release on our new and shiny next-gen (technically current gen, but you get the point) consoles. Publisher Square Enix and developer United Front Games have confirmed its existence as well as given a release date that is actually surprisingly close - 10 October 2014. The re-release was previously spotted earlier this week in a listing on UK games retail site ShopTo.net.

The re-release of the critically acclaimed third-person action-adventure game (due to be called Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition) is a re-mastered update of the original game that aims to increase visual quality, fine tune gameplay and create a fuller experience by including a total of 24 pieces of DLC which will include the story-extending episode Year of the Snake and the horror-themed add-on Nightmare In North Point.

“Sleeping Dogs was a huge success and bringing it to the new generation of consoles was an easy decision. Updated visuals and the inclusion of all the downloadable content really makes this the Definitive Edition of the game.” said Jon Brooke, Vice President of Brand and European Marketing at Square Enix Europe.

“It was an exciting opportunity for the original development team to be able revisit a game we’re so passionate about”, says Dan Sochan, the Senior Producer at United Front Games. “We’re giving old and new fans a lot reasons to pick up the game, as we’ve gone beyond just increasing resolution and running at 1080p. We listened to the fans: we tuned gameplay, we added to the ambiance of Hong Kong, increased audio fidelity and pushed the visuals further than we could on the previous generation of consoles.”

Sleeping Dogs, originally set to be the third installment in the True Crime series back in 2009, follows the character Wei Shen, an officer at San Francisco Police Department who is on assignment duty at the Hong Kong Police Force. Wei is assigned by the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau to go undercover and infiltrate the Triad society to gather information on Sun On Yee (a big hitter in the Triad). Sleeping Dogs lets players freely roam an open world Hong Kong, and features several side activities, such as fight clubs, street races, drug busts amongst others.

Dan scored Sleeping Dogs 8/10 in his retrospective review earlier this year, concluding that although it isn’t without its flaws, it’s an excellent debut for the series.
