If you’re one of those gamers that stares longingly at their shelf, thinking that there’s a Shenmue 3-sized hole in your collection, you wouldn’t be alone.
Thankfully, there may be a slight ray of hope: In an interview with Eurogamer, series creator Yu Suzuki has said that he is currently looking into the possibility of using crowd-funding platform Kickstarter to fund future projects.
Upon being asked if such a move would include funding the development of Shenmue 3, Suzuki answered in the affirmative. Rejoice! He was careful, however, to state that it remains merely a possibility at present; he’s currently conducting research and considering his options.
Shenmue is something of a legend in the history of videogames. Originally released for Sega’s ill-fated Dreamcast console in 1999, the game provided a free-roaming 3D world filled with distractions and steeped in rich detail. It’s also notable for re-introducing Quick Time Events to the medium - for better or worse, depending on your perspective. A sequel followed two years later, released in North America on Microsoft’s fledgling Xbox. Originally intended to be a trilogy, low sales and a famously high development cost meant that Sega pulled the plug, cutting the story short. Fans have lived in hope of a third and final installment ever since.
While this latest development isn’t conclusive evidence that we’ll finally be getting the conclusion to Ryo’s adventure, it at least offers fresh hope to franchise fans.
