Famous e-Sports juggernaut Riot Games released has released a League of Legends cinematic trailer that celebrates the game and its emergent narratives.
Titled A New Dawn, the trailer is a pre-rendered clash between Champions, with the focus on Ahri as she weaves her way through trouble. Void of dialogue and new Champions, the trailer emphasizes the excitement and team play that characterizes the highly popular game.
Based on the mod Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, League of Legends has grown exponentially since its release date in 2009 as a driving player in competitive gaming popularity and a highly watched and played online multiplayer game. It attracted more than 32 million viewers during its October finals, with a prize total as high as $1 million. In fact, the MOBA genre as a whole has exploded in recent years. As well as League of Legends, there’s also DotA2, Blizzard’s upcoming Heroes of the Storm, and many others all vying for a slice of the pie.
In addition to the trailer, Riot Games released a behind-the-scenes video, emphasizing player attachment to specific Champions and the emergent narratives that come along with it. It also looks at the challenges associated with animating and creating the trailer, with a massive amount of focus on understanding each Champion’s minutiae for optimal believability.
