If you picked up a PlayStation 4 on launch, the chances are pretty high that you downloaded Finnish developer Housemarque’s omnidirectional space shooter, Resogun, for free on PlayStation Plus.
For many, “free” might be the right price for an indie game, but we found Resogun to be a welcome evolution of the genre, and well worth its price tag. Fans of the game will be excited to know that a DLC pack for game, titled Resogun Heroes, has just been announced.
The DLC will come with a patch and two new modes, although the exact details of the patch and one of these modes is not ready to be revealed yet. The one mode we can talk about is the new Survival mode; as you might expect, the player will have to try to survive for as long as they can on a single life.
But Heroes’ Survival Mode may well buck trends; instead of simply defeating wave after wave of enemies, progress will be measured by the number of day/night cycles completed. That’s not to say avoiding enemies is win-all strategy though, as defeating enemies is one of the core ways to secure those little green humans you’ll need for points. Humans can be collected by achieving certain combos or simply catching them as they fall from the sky. We’re promised that humans are far more frequent in Survival Mode than in vanilla Resogun - fortunately players should be able to cope with the increased human count as, in Survival Mode, humans don’t need to be picked up and dropped off at select points in the stage.
Other Survival-mode-specific additions include new special effects, music, item icons, enemies and new trophies.
There are still many details surrounding the DLC that we don’t know such as the aforementioned undisclosed features, the release date and pricing. But those details may well come out during E3 over the coming days. Check back with us for more details.
Update: New details have emerged from the Official PlayStation blog.
In addition to Survival mode there will also be a Demolition Mode. In contrast to Survival which is a jazzed up version of vanilla Resogun, Demolition mode gives players access to a giant wrecking they can use to… well, wreck their enemies. There’s also Demolition mode-specific powerups such as multiball, extra balls, ball launching, ball level ups, and so on. It’s a potent weapon but the idle-minded players may find themselves on the receiving end of their wrecking ball ricochets if they aren’t careful.
The patch features a leaderboard, improved friend functionality, local c0-op, and a ship editor, among other features. You can see the ship editor being tinkered with in the screens below.
The patch, which will be free, goes live on June 23. Survival and Demolition modes (the Heroes expansion) will be sold for €4.99. Alternatively a season pass, which will cover the Heroes expansion as well as any other future DLC, will be going on sale for €7.99. If you still haven’t picked up the original Resogun, it’ll be discounted between June 25-July 8, though the exact pricing was not divulged.
