PS3, PS4 and Vita combined sales now top over 100m

A video has surfaced on PlayStation Japan’s Youtube channel which casually references that Sony has sold over 100m units of hardware worldwide between the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. The video appears to be part of a promotion to get third-party accessory makers to obtain licenses and create peripherals for the PlayStation line.

We can safely assume that at least 80m of those units are PS3’s, as that was the figure Sony offered up in November 2013. Likewise, earlier this year we learned that Sony had sold 7m PS4’s, placing it at the time around 3m ahead of its closest competition, the Xbox One. The numbers for the Vita are a somewhat unclear but it appears to have shifted close to 2m units globally.

Microsoft’s sales across the Xbox line are in the same ballpark, with 80m Xbox 360s sold as of last October and 5m Xbox Ones as of April, for a total of around 85m units of hardware. Nintendo on the other hand, has shifted 100m Wii’s as of last year, and 6m Wii Us and 35m 3DSs (all variants) as of March this year. This totals in at a staggering 141m units between the 3 systems.

It should be noted that Sony has been struggling financially over the last few years, but it is thought the recent losses of its game division are simply down to the cost of launching the otherwise successful PlayStation 4. Likewise, Nintendo’s board of directors recently opted to re-elect president Satoru Iwata after months of poor hardware performance, perhaps due to the upturn in Wii U sales traction after the release of Mario Kart 8.

Despite being on the Japanese channel, the entirety of the video including the explanatory voiceover is in English, so feel free to check it out.
