Prey 2 has has been cancelled, Bethesda has confirmed.
At Pax Australia, Bethesda vice-president Pete Hines confirmed the news, stating: “It was game we believed in, but we never felt that it got to where it needed to be - we never saw a path to success if we finished it. Human Head Studios is no longer working on. It’s a franchise we still believe we can do something with - we just need to see what that something is.”
Prey 2 was originally announced in 2011 as being in development by Human Head Studios. Last we knew, it was to have been an ambitious project mixing a blend of RPG and FPS elements in a large open world. Players would travel from area to area, taking on missions usually involving killing a lot of stuff. Think of it a bit like Skyrim mixed with Destiny, and you won’t be too far off the mark.
In 2012, rumors began to circulate that the game had been cancelled, which led to Bethesda stating that while it hadn’t actually been cancelled, it would no longer meet its expected launch date. Ever since then it was effectively in development limbo, with little information about how the game was progressing entering into the public domain. While news of its cancellation won’t be met with surprise by most, it’s nonetheless disappointing to know that a game which once sounded like it could have been a lot of fun will now never be played by anyone.
