Skylanders broke the ground, Disney Infinity applied major brands to it, and even their sister series, Kamen Rider, is getting in on the action in Japan. The big craze in gaming right now is combining video game action with portable, collectible figurines. In most cases, the “portals” that connect the toys to the digital realm are accessories for major game systems, or even recently, multimedia tablets.
The legendary heroes of Power Rangers have decided to get in on the action, but they don’t need a console to connect to; the new Power Rangers Hero Portal is more in-line with the “plug and play” TV game consoles that you find in the toy section, loaded up with Pac-Man, Atari 2600 games, or Sonic The Hedgehog.
A listing for Power Rangers Hero Portal, a game announced at the New York Toy Fair, has popped up on Amazon UK, promising “hours of gaming” across 6 levels and 18 missions. Consumers are then encouraged to purchase “booster packs” to unlock more characters and gameplay.
The initial wave of figures focuses on the current show, Power Rangers Super Megaforce, which primarily uses footage from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger. In Super Megaforce, the Megaforce Power Rangers use new Ranger Keys to transform into the more-powerful Super Megaforce heroes, alongside all twenty years (!) of previous Rangers, and in a few cases, some that never actually showed up in America.
The main base ships with the Red and Blue Super Megaforce Rangers, while two-packs of Green with Pink and Yellow with Silver are listed as booster packs. Given the concept of the show, it’s not a stretch to imagine that earlier heroes in the franchise would be released, especially fan-favorites like the original Green Ranger from Mighty Morphin’.
The device is produced by Hero Portal, who have also made similar games for DC Comics and Ninja Turtles.
