EA has announced the PopCap co-founder, John Vechey, has decided to leave the company.
Vechey, Brian Fiete, and Jason Kapalka founded PopCap in 2000, and Vechey’s departure marks the complete departure of the original team. The company took off with its addictive gem-swapping Bejewelled, though it’s also had great success with Plants vs. Zombies and Peggle, and all games are available on multiple platforms. Back in 2011, EA acquired PopCap for $650 million.
In a company wide memo, Vechey said that he is proud of the company he built:
“When I founded PopCap my biggest goals were to have a good time and to make great games. PopCap’s vision has always been to make people happy through games, and I believe we are achieving that every day. Today, I am proud of this company we have built together. Proud of the games we make and proud to have worked with all of you. I will miss you greatly.”
Vechey went on to say that he would spend his time working with the non-profit Grist.org, exploring issues of peace and social justice so that he can “appreciate the last 15 years.”
On the heels of Vechey’s departure, EA Mobile boss-man Frank Gibeau confirmed an all new Peggle game was in the works.
Good luck, John. Your games have passed a lot of hours and made a lot of people very happy.
