Pokemon developer announces new game - and it’s not on a Nintendo console

Tembo the Badass Elephant

Game Freak, the developer of every Pokemon game since Red, Green and Blue in 1996, are set to release their first game for a non-Nintendo console since Click Medic for the original PlayStation in 1999.

Named Tembo the Badass Elephant, the game follows Tembo - a titular “badass elephant” - as he parades through Shell City, taking upon hordes of a devastating force named PHANTOM, who are lead by a mysterious masked commander. As war machines tear through the city, and the National Army struggles to contain the threat, Tembo - along with his avian friend Picolo - work their way through seventeen different 2D, side-scrolling levels to bring about the end of their tyrannical onslaught.

John Clarke, Senior Vice President of Commercial Publishing for SEGA Europe - who are publishing the game - said, “We’re delighted to be working with Game Freak to bring this heavyweight adventure to an audience we feel it will have relephants to. It’s a trunkful of fun and we think gamers are going to love it. Hopefully more than my rubbish elephant puns.”

Elephant puns aside, the game seems to have taken some influence from Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the art style makes it seem genuinely quite intriguing. It’ll be interesting to see how non-Nintendo devices take to Game Freak, and whether the move will pay off for the company. The developers did release Solitiba, a bizarre combination of solitaire and horse racing, on iOS and Android last year, after the 3DS release in 2013, which did fairly well in Japan, but received no real coverage in the Western side of things. I suppose time will tell if Tembo will make Game Freak peanuts, or cause all other elephant-based side scrollers to be irr-elephant. (I swear, I’m done with the puns now.)

Tembo the Badass Elephant is set for a Summer release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
