Play StarCraft 2: Legacy Of The Void’s Prologue From Today

Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void promo shot

If you’ve pre-purchased StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, you can play 3 prequel missions right now, Blizzard has announced.

The prequel missions will eventually be made available to everyone, Blizzard has confirmed - so even if you don’t pre-purchase, you’ll be able to play them at some point.

Legacy of the Void is the third and final chapter in the StarCraft 2 trilogy. Where Wings of Liberty focused on the Terran race and Heart of the Swarm focused on the Zerg, Legacy of the Void will follow the Protoss. It’s a standalone release too, meaning that you won’t need to already own Wings of Liberty or Heart of the Swarm in order to play.

As well as concluding the StarCraft story, Legacy of the Void features a number of brand new multiplayer modes. Allied Commanders is a new multiplayer co-op mode which adds campaign-style objectives to standard multiplayer matches. Players will choose a commander with unique abilities prior to each match, and can level them up in order to gain access to new units, abilities, and customization options.

Archon mode, meanwhile, sees two players joining forces and sharing control over a single base. Blizzard describes Archon Mode as an ideal way for new players to learn the basics of StarCraft‘s famously demanding multiplayer side, allowing a veteran player to pair with a rookie and teach them the ropes.

More details about Legacy of the Void‘s various special editions have also been announced. As well as a digital Standard Edition costing $39.99/ £29.99, a Digital Deluxe edition is available for pre-purchase at a price-point of $59.99/ £44.99. The Digital Deluxe edition contains the following cosmetic extras, for use in other Blizzard games:

  • Archon battle pet ready to join your side in World of Warcraft®
  • Void Seeker mount to charge through the Nexus in Heroes of the Storm
  • Protoss card back to demonstrate your psionic potential in Hearthstone®
  • Protoss-themed portraits and unit skin for StarCraft II

The Collector’s Edition, meanwhile, contains everything from the Deluxe edition as well as a special edition of the StarCraft Field Manual (which will also be sold separately), a DVD of cinematics and special features, and the game’s soundtrack on CD. The Collector’s Edition will be available for purchase at “selected” retailers, with a RRP of $69.99/ £59.99.

Anyone who pre-orders Legacy of the Void will also be given access to a StarCraft Hero in Blizzard’s DotA-rivalling MOBA Heroes of the Storm.

Legacy of the Void is currently in closed beta, before a final release sometime towards the end of the year.
