Sony Online Entertainment, the studio behind the free-to-play massively multiplayer online first-person shooter PlanetSide 2 (and a whole bunch more), has set a Guinness World Record - Guinness World Records of course being the a universally recognized global authority on record-breaking achievements.

The record was set for most players online in a single FPS battle - a pretty impressive award which not only marks PlanetSide 2 in history in terms of large scale FPS videogames and videogame awards in general, but also shows just how dedicated the PlanetSide community is.

PlanetSide held the original record for this achievement and we’re thrilled to have officially taken it back with PlanetSide 2,” said David Carey, the producer for PlanetSide 2. “It’s truly the players that define the game and we’d like to extend a BIG congratulations to our players for reaching such an accomplishment nearly every night, as well as thank them for making PlanetSide 2 exactly the type of experience it was meant to be.”

The record was made over the weekend - January 24th, to be precise - and was orchestrated by a partnership between SOE and PlanetSideBattles, a popular player-driven community, who arranged for an in-game battle on Hossin between all three of PlanetSide 2’s Empires (Terran Republic, Vanu Sovereignty and the New Conglomerate). The end result was a whopping 1,158 simultaneous players battling it out in one instance via the game’s Jaeger competitive server.

“This amazing achievement shows not only how truly massive the PlanetSide 2 universe is, but also how inclusive its online community is,” said Annie Nguyen, Video Games Records Manager at Guinness World Records. “This title truly embodies the international, record-breaking spirit of Guinness World Records.”

Meanwhile, the long-awaited PS4 release of PlanetSide 2 is on course to arrive later this year. The game recently entered into closed beta testing on Sony’s console, so it shouldn’t be too long now before we get a final release date.
