What do you get if you cross Minecraft with Skyrim and then add a dash of Frontier: Elite II?

Probably something completely bonkers, but possibly something a little like Planets³.

In development by French Indie outfit Cubical Drift, Planets³ aims to provide a fully-fledged RPG experience that will have you exploring dungeons, discovering a detailed backstory and indulging in optional side-quests. Although it may look like Minecraft on the surface, Cubical Drift is planning something even more ambitious. Every player will exist on their own planet, but all of those planets will exist on the same server - look up to the night sky, and you might catch a glimpse of what one of your friends is up to.

Players will be able to research new technology, craft items and upgrade their abilities. In addition, you’ll be able to recruit computer-controlled followers who will assist you in various ways - perhaps by building a new structure, or assisting you in combat. You can even create vehicles to help you traverse the world. And you’ll probably need them: Cubical Drift is claiming that each individual planet consists of over thirty thousand billion blocks, measuring 8km along every edge. That’s a whole lot of surface area to explore.

The developer is claiming to be utilizing some advanced technology to accomplish their ambitions and while it remains to be seen whether or not they can succeed in their goal, if they manage to achieve even half of what they intend, they could be on to a winner.

The next step for the game is, of course, a Kickstarter funding campaign - which is currently scheduled to launch this coming Thursday. There’s no news yet on how much the developers will be asking for in order to complete development - or how long they expect us to wait for the game - but it’s certainly something we’ll be keeping an eye on. You can check out the announcement trailer above.
