Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment’s spiritual successor to classic Infinity Engine game Baldur’s Gate, will be officially launched on March 26th, the developer has revealed.
Created by some of the same minds behind classic Black Isle RPGs Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment, the old-school RPG revival originally cropped up on Kickstarter back in 2012, where it managed to gather a hugely impressive $3,986,929. At the time, it was the highest-funded game ever on the popular crowdfunding platform. Subsequent donations through Obsidian’s own site saw the game’s development budget pushed beyond $4.5m.
Taking place in an original fantasy setting with a proprietary ruleset, Pillars of Eternity features isometric gameplay and a real-time-with-pause battle system. The game has been in Early Access on Steam for quite some time now, with Obsidian using player feedback to inform the development process - something which the developer believes has paid off.
“Everybody at Obsidian has been dedicated to ensuring that Pillars of Eternity is the game we said it would be ever since we launched the Kickstarter campaign,” said Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian’s CEO in a press release. ” “The community has been incredibly forthcoming with their feedback, and we want to thank all of our fans for being so engaged with the game’s development – and for giving us the time to implement their suggestions and ensure Pillars of Eternity is a game we can be proud of.”
Later today, Obsidian will be showing off new areas and features that have never been seen before via a live stream on Twitch. You’ll be able to watch that at 1pm PST/ 21:00 GMT by heading over to publisher Paradox Interactive’s Twitch Channel.
